Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse is a type of non-physical violence that one person inflicts on another, that is, it is hidden and very prone to remain concealed. It destroys the individual’s self-esteem and people begin to doubt their perception and reality.

Emotional abuse is common in romantic relationships and marriages, but can also occur between friends, family members and work colleagues. This may present in romantic relationships as threats, insults, constant monitoring, excessive jealousy, manipulation, humiliation, intimidation, and dismissiveness, among others.

Emotional abuse is common in romantic relationships and marriages, but can also occur between friends, family members and work colleagues. It may be accompanied by other kinds of abuse: sexual, financial or physical. Also, definitions such as gaslighting, love bombing and hoovering, which are frequently heard today, also take their place in the literature as emotional manipulation/abuse.

Coping with emotional abuse begins with victims getting rid of this cycle and not blaming themselves. If you are being emotionally abused, trust your own instincts. Protect your personal space by setting your own boundaries. Although it may not feel good at first to share this situation, do not hesitate to seek support from loved ones and professional help and most importantly allow yourself time to heal.
